(Fort McMurray) Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude are proud to announce the 3rd nominee for the Women of Inspiration series 2013-2014:

Mary Thomas

Originally from Mumbai, India, Mary Thomas moved to Fort McMurray with her husband and two children, and has been a part of the Wood Buffalo community for many years, bringing along with her a passion for culture and arts.

Mary is an active member and contributor to The Culture Network, a network that provides a local forum to discuss ideas, events, challenges and solutions for arts and culture in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. She has been one of the spear heads in bringing Alberta Culture Days to the Wood Buffalo Region and was recently instated as the new Executive Director for the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo. With Fort McMurray being a city of persons from such diverse backgrounds, Mary is truly a leader and an inspiration to minorities looking to promote and display their personal culture.

Mary also contributes to the Wood Buffalo community through the liberal and visual arts. In the past Mary hosted a talk show on KAOS radio station on the topic of “Making Fort McMurray our Home”, actively engaging the eclectic residents of Fort McMurray who may be struggling with adjusting to a new lifestyle in the region, and she was previously a trainer at Keyano College, creating workforce development programs in the area of communication skills. Mary is currently a photojournalist for SNAP Wood Buffalo.

Aside from her many accomplishments, Mary is also very passionate about volunteering. She is a regular volunteer with the Soup Kitchen at the Fellowship Baptist Church; a volunteer tutor in English with Literacy Alberta, helping adults to learn an additional language; she is the Communications Coordinator at Leadership Wood Buffalo and helps to source, engage and inspire the future social-profit leaders of our community.

Mary continues to give her time, energy, resources and talents to the many non-profit associations in our community, volunteering whenever she can. Her strong presence in the cultural community is truly an inspiration to any newcomer to the area, and especially to women of color trying to make a difference in our town. Her accomplishments will continue to inspire ALL girls, to be Strong, Smart and especially Bold.

Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude will honour Mary and 11 other nominees, at the Women of Inspiration Celebration which will take place May 24th, 2014.

The Women of Inspiration is a partnership between Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude, with a goal to recognize women throughout the Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers and help create change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live right here.
