(Fort McMurray) Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude are proud to announce the 3rd nominee for the Women of Inspiration series 2014-2015:

Flor Connors

Flor Connors has shown generosity and hard work in making Fort McMurray a better place. As the Executive Director of the Nistawoyou Association Friendship Centre, her main initiative is to improve the lives of urban Aboriginal people within the community.

One of the issues in the community that Flo concentrates on is homelessness. She has spent time developing programs to help the disadvantaged survive Fort McMurray’s chilly temperatures by providing them a warm place during the day, supplying them with meals, and by acquiring winter gear such as gloves and hats. She has spent time helping them with job search on the internet, as well as making television available to them to keep them aware of current events and up to date on what is going on in the world.

Flor has also helped to develop youth and elder programming at  the Nistawoyou. Twice a week, youth and elders take advantage of the chance to socialize with each other in a safe environment. Through Flor’s leadership, members have been given the opportunity to explore their artistic talents and express themselves through art, while also connecting with each other and sharing. Flor inspires and encourages the group to paint on the windows for the Christmas season, Valentine’s Day and any upcoming special events at the Nistawoyou. Flor strives to share their spirit and talent with the community, which gives the youth and elders a sense of pride. Another newly developed initiative at Nistawoyou that Flor is supporting is the women’s healing program for women who were victimized by Native residential schools.

To keep the Centre running smoothly with programs and services, Flor spends many hours researching and applying for funds to help in providing the programming. During her time, Flor has devoted her time above and beyond for what is required of her job at the Nistawoyou as an Executive Director. She provides an atmosphere of love and friendship which comes across in everyday events and it is her passion and drive to improve the lives of others that helps to strengthen the impact of the Centre and aid in its growth.

Additionally to her role at Nistawoyou, Flor also sits on the steering committee of the Urban Aboriginal Connect for Urban Aboriginal Strategy under the RMWB’s initiatives. With all these things that she has been doing, her impact on Aboriginal people has been tremendous.

Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude will honour Flor and 11 other nominees, at the Women of Inspiration Celebration which will take place in June 2015 at the Sawridge Hotel.

The Women of Inspiration is a partnership between Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude, with a goal to recognize women throughout the Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers and help create change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live right here.
