Tonight, as we recognized  and honoured the nominees, finalists and winners, emcees Sean Conroy and Amanda Propp spoke about the importance of the sector and the need to change the term “nonprofit” to “social profit” to better reflect what these organizations and volunteers truly do.  And, keynote Dave Meslin spoke about the importance of creating a culture of community engagement by instilling four things in our community, neighbours, friends, co-workers, colleagues …  confidence (your  opinion matters );  an understanding of how the system works by providing the right tools; malleability (change is possible) and; expansion of ownership beyond our own living rooms.

The Heart of Wood Buffalo Leadership Awards celebrates excellence in the nonprofit sector.  They honour the achievements of social profit leaders, philanthropists and community organizations that embody the spirit of community innovation, capacity building, leadership and social prosperity.  Their passion for our community and their dedication to improving the quality of life explain why they are the heart of Wood Buffalo.

This year we received 34 nominations from which 18 finalists were selected and celebrated.   We congratulate the six award winners and recognize the incredible accomplishments of all nominees.

Keynote:

Dave Meslin

Dave Meslin is an activist, journalist, community organizer and professional rabble-rouser with a focus on public space, voting reform and providing an antidote to apathy.  With one foot planted firmly in the world of mainstream politics and the other foot dancing in the more vibrant universe of grassroots activism, Meslin has found ways to bring them both together and turn energy into action.

Emcees:

Sean Conroy and Amanda Propp

Sean is originally from Huntsville Ontario and has been a part of the Mix 103.7 Team and the Fort McMurray Community for the last 5 years.  He is an avid sports fan and loves the New England Patriots more than life itself, but don’t mention Super Bowl XLVI.  If you listen to the Mix Morning show you will know that Sean is the voice of reason and common sense on the show.  He loves his magic bullet, sports illustrated and big words.  Amanda was born in Nova Scotia and raised in Saskatchewan and has an appreciation for oysters from the sea and the prairie.  She is a proud mother of an energetic 6 year old and it’s hard to tell who likes to color more, her or her son.  Although never owning a horse herself, Amanda is the biggest fan of the Canadian show Heartland.  And this cannot be proven in a court of law but she might start fires in her apartment just to meet fire fighters.
