Girls Inc. Staying Strong Mentoring Program

Teach  |  Inspire  |  Motivate  |   Empower

Girls Incorporated of Northern Alberta is pleased to offer a weekly mentoring program. This program is designed to teach, inspire, motivate and empower girls ages 7-13 in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Why Mentoring Matters

What we know about mentoring is that it matters to positive youth development. A five year study sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada found that children with mentors were more confident and had fewer behavioural problems. Girls in the study were four times less likely to become bullies than those without a mentor. Most importantly, young people showed increased belief in their abilities to succeed in school and felt less anxiety related to peer pressure.

Our Program

The Girls Inc. Staying Strong’s mission is to teach, inspire, motivate and empower young girls of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Our goal is to create sustained and supportive mentor relationships for children in need ages 7-13. The program matches girls with responsible mentors who can guide them in developing better self-esteem, creating healthy relationships, and making positive life choices.

This program is a site based model where mentors and mentees meet in a supervised environment at a set time. This allows for the volunteer mentors to properly manage their busy schedules, but also provides the much needed consistency to the mentoring relationship.

Staying Strong incorporates a number of initiatives that facilitate and guide mentors to focus on their mentee’s individual needs. Healthy lifestyles, self-esteem, art, leadership and anti-violence are a few of the initiatives incorporated into the program through activities that are facilitated by the mentors.

The Program

This program runs on Tuesdays of Saturday’s.  Our mentoring program is a group mentoring program where one mentor will eventually be paired with three mentees. This allows time for everyone involved to become comfortable and familiar with one another.
The mentors will take more of a leading role as they will be planning the activities with the mentees. The direction of the program is up to the youth! Fill out the Program Registrations and Waiver Form
