Women of Inspiration Education Award

(Fort McMurray) Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta are proud to announce the continuation of their Scholarship program and call for applications for three scholarships in conjunction with the Women of Inspiration series, presented by Syncrude.

This will be the fifth year that the organization will be providing the educational support to three women from the region. The scholarships, valued at $3000 each will be available to female post- secondary students from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The award will be provided to a student pursuing studies in accredited universities, colleges or technical/trades school. The scholarships will be based on the following criteria: Financial need; Academic Achievements; and Extracurricular and community Involvement.

  • Applicants must have lived in the RMWB for at least one year immediately prior to applying for the scholarship.
  • Applicants must be registered as a full time student leading to a recognized degree or diploma.
  • Applicants must provide proof of acceptance into accredited colleges, universities or trade schools
  • Two of the scholarships have been named after former Women of Inspiration: The Barb Jewers Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who demonstrates a sincere commitment to volunteerism and community activism. The Elsie Yanik Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a qualifying applicant with First Nations or Metis ancestry.

The deadline to apply is July 15th 2017 at 4:00pm. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered, no exceptions. All applications will have a blind judging by a selection committee.

The Women of Inspiration is a partnership between Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude, with a goal to recognize women throughout the Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers and help create change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live within their community.

 Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta in partnership with Syncrude Canada will provide 3 – $3,000 awards to female students from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), pursuing post-secondary education at a recognized post-secondary institution. The award will be provided to a female student pursuing studies in, but not limited to, colleges or university studies. Technical or Trades studies are also eligible.

AWARD CRITERIA AND GUIDELINES

  • The award will be provided to a female student from the RMWB.
  • The award will be provided to a student pursuing studies in university, colleges or technical/trades schools.
  • The award will be given based on the following criteria:
    • Financial need
    • Academic achievement
    • Extracurricular and community involvement
    • Students must apply for the award. Application forms will be made available to all high schools in the region, Keyano College, and will be listed on Girls Inc website.
    • Students must be registered as “full-time” according to the institutional guidelines of their chosen school.
    • Students must be enrolled in programs leading to a diploma, degree or trade certification (minimum program length two-years).
    • Students must maintain passing grades. If after the first semester, passing grades are not achieved, the second half of the award will not be issued.
    • An award will be discontinued if passing marks are not maintained, or if the person does not maintain full course load attendance. However, the recipient may re-apply when studies are resumed (provided eligibility requirements are met).
    • The maximum number of years a student may receive the award is one (1).
    • One-half of the award will be paid directly to the student at the beginning of the school year (September) and the remaining half at the beginning of her second semester (January), providing all requirements are met.

APPLICANTS MUST:

  • have lived in the RMWB for at least one year immediately prior to applying for the award, or formerly been a long-term resident;
  • be registered as a full time student leading to a recognized degree or diploma or certification;
  • provide parental financial information as required by our application form;
  • provide your most recent transcripts from the last institute attended with your application;
  • provide proof of acceptance into accredited college, university or trade school within Canada before an award can be received, and
  • submit their completed application form, along with accompanying documents, by no later than July 15th, 2017.

SELECTION
A blind selection committee comprised of Girls Inc. Board members and staff will evaluate applications and its decision will be final.
Criteria to be used in selecting award recipients are financial need, academic performance and potential, and extracurricular and community involvement.
Girls Inc. will notify all applicants in writing by the end of August.
