Story by Mix 103.7:
“The annual Zombie Run is taking a bite out of the United Way’s annual fundraising goal.
More than 75 walking dead lurched after 120 survivors through the Birchwood Trails on Saturday, raising more than $7000 dollars.
“It was sunny and it was just amazing,” says Girls Inc. Executive Director Ann Dort-MacLean. “We had tons and tons of tons of zombies and runners come out and volunteers. It was just a great event.”
Staging the 5.5 kilometer run in the woods, instead of the downtown core, also added to the apocalyptic atmosphere of the race.
“They had to work harder because when we were downtown it was mostly flat,” she says. “The trails that we had, had a few hills and we sort of fixed it up by putting some hay bales there and doing some obstacle things, so they had to work to survive this year, I think, a little harder. And there was a lot more zombies this year so they really had to work.”
The donations will help the United Way reach its $7.8 million target for the annual fall campaign.”
