Girls Inc. and Bouchier Celebrate Allison Flett as the First Women of Inspiration 2023-24
Fort McMurray (July 5, 2023) – Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Bouchier are delighted to announce the first recipient of the Women of Inspiration 2023-2024 series, Allison Flett. As a Cree woman and esteemed member of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, Allison has devoted a significant portion of her life to cultivating awareness and storytelling within the Indigenous community, particularly in the Wood Buffalo region.
Allison’s profound commitment to fostering understanding and acknowledging the historical truth of Indigenous Peoples is evident through her diligent work alongside the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Her actions embody the values of Truth & Reconciliation, as she tirelessly advocates for the Indigenous population, seeking to bridge gaps and dispel stereotypes.
Drawing inspiration from her deep-rooted connection to her family, the awe-inspiring natural surroundings, and the remarkable people in the region, Allison embraces her role as a proud representative of her culture. With a touch of humor, she jests that spending a few days in Edmonton is enough to make her yearn for the wide-open spaces and welcoming small-town ambiance of her hometown.
From an early age, Allison’s passion for her heritage and her aspiration to enlighten others began to flourish. Reflecting on her journey, she recalls the realization of the disparities faced by Indigenous and non-Indigenous children in their educational experiences and the unfair stigmas imposed upon them. This realization sparked her determination to lend a strong and positive voice to advocate for these children and guide them towards a brighter future. “That’s where it started,” Allison shared, “I contemplated how a strong voice, used effectively, could make a difference and empower these children. From that point on, I found my path.”
While acknowledging the challenges she encounters along the way, Allison draws strength and motivation from her children, affirming her unwavering commitment to ensuring their opportunities for success and the freedom to be judged solely on their authentic selves, unburdened by prevailing stereotypes. Reflecting on her personal history, Allison expresses the urgency she feels to break the cycle and assume the responsibility of addressing the unspoken truths carried by her late grandmother, who endured the residential school system. ” I feel like my generation as well as my siblings and I now have to be the cycle breakers and do the heavy lifting,” explained Allison, underlining the significance of her continued advocacy.
For Allison, being strong, smart, and bold means persevering and pushing beyond limits. She recounts instances where she found herself in meetings focused on Indigenous relations, with her voice never sought after. In moments of doubt, she contemplated retreating and abandoning the cause, feeling unheard. However, she discovered the strength within herself to speak up, ensuring that her invaluable insights could reach the ears of those assembled.
Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Bouchier take immense pride in announcing Allison Flett as the first recipient of the Women of Inspiration award. This distinction serves as a testament to her exceptional contributions, unwavering dedication, and trailblazing spirit.
If you know an extraordinary woman deserving of recognition, we encourage you to nominate her today. Together, we can celebrate and uplift the remarkable women who inspire us all.
