Tonight, as we recognized  and honoured the nominees, finalists and winners, emcees Sean Conroy and Amanda Propp spoke about the importance of the sector and the need to change the term “nonprofit” to “social profit” to better reflect what these organizations and volunteers truly do.  And, keynote Dave Meslin spoke about the importance of creating a culture of community engagement by instilling four things in our community, neighbours, friends, co-workers, colleagues …  confidence (your  opinion matters );  an understanding of how the system works by providing the right tools; malleability (change is possible) and; expansion of ownership beyond our own living rooms.

The Heart of Wood Buffalo Leadership Awards celebrates excellence in the nonprofit sector.  They honour the achievements of social profit leaders, philanthropists and community organizations that embody the spirit of community innovation, capacity building, leadership and social prosperity.  Their passion for our community and their dedication to improving the quality of life explain why they are the heart of Wood Buffalo.

This year we received 34 nominations from which 18 finalists were selected and celebrated.   We congratulate the six award winners and recognize the incredible accomplishments of all nominees.

The 2013 Heart of Wood Buffalo Leadership Awards were proudly presented by Social Prosperity Wood Buffalo and the Suncor Energy Foundation in collaboration with Volunteer Wood Buffalo, Leadership Wood Buffalo, Nonprofit Sector Link Wood Buffalo, the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association and the United Way of Fort McMurray.  In addition, this year’s awards are sponsored by H.
