Girls Inc. names first Woman of Inspiration for 2021

Fort McMurray (May 20, 2020)— Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Bouchier are excited to announce that Regina Oppon is the first Women of Inspiration Nominee in the 2021 Series. Oppon was selected for her community involvement and dedication to support immigrant women and youth – particularly girls.

Oppon is the Executive Director of the Rehoboth Alliance in Fort McMurray. She works to deliver programs that help women and youth pursue their full potential while addressing systemic barriers around gender inequality. The Rehoboth Alliance organizes summer camps for low- income families’ children every year. Oppon also helped establish programs that target immigrant women within the Wood Buffalo Region.

Oppon was a key pillar in establishing Black History Month events in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, which is celebrated every February. The weekend long celebration includes activities for children, youth and adults. Oppon also helps organize International Women’s Day within our community.

In the nearly 10 years that Oppon has lived in Fort McMurray, she has been a past board member with the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo and the Fort McMurray African Association.

The Women of Inspiration Series is a five-year partnership between Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Bouchier to recognize and celebrate inspiring women in the Wood Buffalo Region. Throughout the year, we will recognize five different women who inspire others, ignite change and break new-ground for women’s and girls’ rights and opportunities in our community.
