Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta Raises Over $66K and Unpacks Empowerment at (EM)POWER: Women of Inspiration Celebration 2024
Fort McMurray, Alberta (March 22, 2024) – The (EM)POWER: Women of Inspiration Celebration 2024, presented by Bouchier, marked an inspiring close, gathering 389 guests at MacDonald Island to honor five remarkable women from the Wood Buffalo region.
- Allison Flett, celebrated for her dedicated work towards Truth & Reconciliation and supporting the Indigenous community within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
- Krystell O’Hara, recognized for her unwavering advocacy on behalf of women, immigrants, and those facing systemic barriers.
- Denean Robinson, honored for her pioneering contributions to the aviation industry and inspiring message of perseverance.
- Mireille Zatcha, acknowledged for her resilience and active engagement in community issues.
- Kyla Penner, applauded for her significant impact on shifting culture, women’s labor force participation and family unit care.
These women, who exemplify the true essence of being strong, smart, and bold, were celebrated for their significant contributions to the community and for setting a powerful example of leadership and resilience.
The event was headlined by Vanessa Fulford, a Fort McMurray local and Canada’s Astronaut Finalist, symbolizing the pinnacle of achievement and the limitless possibilities that await those who dare to dream big and challenge the status quo. Fulford’s story added a profound layer to the evening, highlighting how each of the five Women of Inspiration have empowered girls and women by breaking barriers and taking positive risks in our local community.
This year, the event successfully raised over $66,000 in proceeds. While slightly lower than the previous year – largely due to the economic challenges, the event saw positive outcomes with an increase in community support. Notably, the participation of 49 partners, up from 37 last year, and donations from 51 businesses for the auction, brought the total to over 100 businesses involved in supporting this vital cause.
The event also marked the first-ever Mini Gala, attended by 94 girls ages 9-17 from Fort McMurray, Fort McKay, Anzac and Janvier, facilitating an opportunity for young girls to engage with the headliners, share their thoughts on empowerment, and envision their futures as strong, smart, and bold individuals.
Nicole Bourque-Bouchier, CEO of Bouchier, stated, “We are proud to stand with Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta in celebrating the powerful stories of women who have made a difference. Their journeys of empowerment are a beacon of hope and inspiration, driving us all to strive for a world where every girl and woman recognizes her potential.”
Nanase Tonda, Executive Director of Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta, expressed her gratitude and optimism, stating, “The initiative not only highlighted the achievements of these extraordinary women but also served as a platform for unpacking the notion of ’empowerment’ throughout the weekend. It was a profound opportunity for both the youth and adults to reflect on the use of power and how we can collectively empower one another for a better future.”
The success of the (EM)POWER: Women of Inspiration Celebration 2024 sets a promising path forward as Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta continues its mission to inspire all girls to embody strength, intelligence, and boldness. With the continued support of partners like Bouchier, the organization looks forward to welcoming more girls through its doors, helping them become the leaders of tomorrow.
