Paralympic Silver Medalist Lisa DeJong to Speak at Woman of Inspiration Gala Following Scheduling Conflict with Waneek Horn-Miller
Fort McMurray, AB – February 18, 2025 – Due to unforeseen circumstances, Waneek Horn-Miller, originally scheduled as the keynote speaker for the Woman of Inspiration Gala on March 8th, will no longer be able to attend. However, we are thrilled to announce that Paralympic silver medalist Lisa DeJong will be stepping in to deliver an inspiring address.
Lisa DeJong is a trailblazer and a role model. She made history as the first Canadian to win a Paralympic medal in Para Snowboarding. At the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games, she won silver in the snowboard cross, an achievement that highlights her unwavering determination and resilience.
DeJong’s story is one of overcoming incredible odds. Born with a rare condition, tibial hemimelia, she had her left foot amputated at the age of three. Despite this challenge, she never let her circumstances define her, pursuing her passion for snowboarding and breaking barriers along the way. Today, Lisa is not only an accomplished athlete but also an advocate for perseverance, empowerment, and belief in one’s potential.
Beyond her Paralympic success, Lisa is deeply committed to inspiring others through her storytelling. She shares her journey with students across the province, motivating them to pursue their dreams no matter the challenges they face. Lisa is also the author of the newly released children’s book, *Lucy’s Fancy Leg*, a story that encourages young readers to embrace their uniqueness.
Lisa’s list of accolades is impressive and continues to grow. In 2022, she was awarded the Strathcona County Athlete of Excellence Award. In 2023, she received both the King Clancy Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the community. Most recently, in August 2023, she was honoured with the Canadian Paralympic Sport Award for Best Paralympic Debut by a Female Athlete.
“While we’ve had a change in our keynote speaker, our commitment to celebrating remarkable women in our region remains stronger than ever. We are thrilled to welcome Lisa DeJong, whose message will undoubtedly inspire and uplift us all” Beverley Tjarera, Interim Executive Director of Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta.
The Woman of Inspiration Gala, a celebration of women who have made significant leadership contributions to their communities, will take place on March 8, 2025. Tickets are still available, and we encourage everyone to join us for an unforgettable evening filled with inspiration and empowerment.
