(Fort McMurray)– Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta is ecstatic to announce a new partnership with Finning Canada.

Finning has generously pledged $5,000 a year, for the next three years to help Girls Inc. deliver their Operation S.M.A.R.T Program and award two $1000 scholarships to Indigenous female students from the Wood Buffalo region pursuing a post-secondary education in a science, mathematics, engineering or technology (STEM) related field.

The partnership has allowed Girls Inc. and Finning to create the Finning Canada STEM Award, Finning will provide two $1000 scholarships to qualified applicants in their first year of post-secondary school enrolled in a STEM program.

“Finning Canada is very proud to be involved with Girls Inc.’s Operation S.M.A.R.T program. In keeping with our core purpose to build and power a better world and our focus on STEM education in youth, Finning encourages girls in the region to get involved in the program and consider applying for the Finning awards to assist with their continued education in a STEM field,” said Brent Davis, Vice President, Mining Solutions, Finning Canada.

The scholarships will be handed out annually and given to the students who best fit all of the criteria. Preference will be given to those who previously participated in Girls Inc.’s Operation S.M.A.R.T Program.

“We are absolutely thrilled to partner with Finning Canada on this innovative, meaningful and bold initiative. What a way to celebrate ‘back to school 2019-2020’! Together with a growing body of advocates for women and girls in STEM, we hope that many girls in our community find sparks and passion through this program and ultimately break the gender stereotypes,” said Executive Director of Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta, Nanase Tonda.

Scholarship applications are open from September 15, 2019 to November 15, 2019. More details are available on Girls Inc.’ webpage: “Finning Canada STEM Award”.
