Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude are proud to announce the ninth nominee for the Women of Inspiration series, D’Andre Wilson.
D’Andre Wilson is a strong, independent, ambitious and highly motivated young woman who is an inspiration to all women and young girls around her. At the age of 24, she already has two companies to her credit – BrainSTEM Alliance and My Ziri Bag.
D’Andre is originally from Nassau, Bahamas. She moved to Canada in 2006 to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering from McGill University. After completing her degree, she then went on to receive a Master’s of Applied Science from the Centre of Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship at the University of Toronto. D’Andre’s career has spanned the financial, research, non-profit and energy sectors. In 2011 D’Andre was a Agents of Change winner through the Centre for Social Innovation in Toronto. D’Andre was recognized for her long terms involvement in the National Society of Black Engineers, and for her work to teach leadership and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) to black youth.
D’Andre moved to Fort McMurray in September of 2011, and in addition to her impressive academic credentials and strong engineering career, she is also giving back to the community in various ways.
D’Andre spearheaded an ‘Intro to Engineering’ program through Girls Inc which was designed to encourage young girls by giving them an up close and personal insight into the engineering profession. Over the eight week course of the program D’Andre demonstrated the many incredible opportunities available within engineering, and inspired the girls to venture into the male dominated industry. D’Andre’s leadership and magnetic personality had a strong impact on the young participants as they kept them coming back for more each week.
Her personal accomplishments thus far, and her drive to build a stronger community around herself through helping others, make D’Andre a true inspiration to all women – particularly women within the RMWB.
Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude will honour D’Andre, and eleven other nominees, at the Women of Inspiration Celebration which will take place on June 1 2013.
The Women of Inspiration Series is a partnership between Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude; with a goal to recognize women throughout the Wood Buffalo region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers, and help create positive change. The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live right here.
